Avoid Post-Winter Sports Injuries as You Spring Into Action

Jack Frost is playing mind games with us lately. The snow is melting, albeit slowly. The trails are being uncovered and starting to call out, and it’s finally time to swap those skis for running shoes and tennis rackets! While we all love the energy that comes with the first warm days of spring, our bodies might need a little extra TLC to catch up with our enthusiasm.

After a long, chilly winter, jumping back into high-intensity sports can sometimes lead to strains and sprains. At Sports Rehab @ Denver Tech, we want to make sure your transition into spring season is as smooth as a fresh mountain breeze.

The Winter "Hibernation" Effect

Even if you hit the gym during the winter, "cold weather stiffness" is a real thing! When our muscles haven't been pushed in specific ways for a few months, we are more prone to common spring injuries:

  • Shin Splints: Common for those hitting the pavement for the first time since November.
  • Tendonitis: Especially in the shoulders and elbows for our tennis and pickleball fans!
  • Hamstring Strains: Usually caused by sprinting before those muscles are properly warmed up.

How to Stay in the Game: Prevention Tips

  1. Warm Up (For Real!): Spend at least 10–15 minutes on dynamic stretching to get the blood flowing to those winter-rested muscles.
  2. The 10% Rule: Increase your intensity or distance by no more than 10% each week. Slow and steady wins the race—and keeps you off the sidelines!
  3. Check Your Gear: Make sure your shoes haven't lost their support over the winter. Your joints will thank you!
